Okay, several people have asked for details, so here goes:

The Proposal

It started with me saying that I was going to the grocery store.  But, I went to Carl and Elén’s house.  They weren’t expecting me.  Carl and Elén are the couple who introduced us.  Elén is Brasilian.  Dri’s parents don’t speak any English, so I had written and translated what I wanted to say to her father and needed Elén’s help making the call.  They had just gotten up, and Elén was in the shower, so I left my “script” for Elén to correct and went to the market.  When I returned, I called Dri’s parents on one phone while Elén listed on the extension.  I managed to get though my script, and Elén assured me that Sr. Neil was very happy to give me his blessing.  He was very surprised because a surprise proposal is not the norm in Brasil.

Then I went home.  Dri was making cheese bread for a nice, hearty brunch we were planning before heading out to look at another place to hold the wedding reception.  We have been making plans for the wedding since about Thanksgiving.  We knew we wanted to get married about 2 seconds after meeting face to face.  We were positive within a month.  We had even looked at a few rings in Manchester and New York so that I had an idea of what she liked. So, she knew the proposal was coming, but she didn’t know when.  She was not expecting it.  She had not even given me a ring to use as a basis for size.  She was pretty certain that I would ask while we were in Brasil visiting her family the first week of March.

So, when I got home, I put away the groceries, helped her finish the cheese bread and put it in the oven.  Then I told her she should take a shower, and I’d get the rest of brunch ready.  But she said “I lost my cell phone, I want to call my parents.”

“No, I took your cell phone because mine is broken,” I replied “but we should call your parents later in the car so I can talk too.”

“Okay, but I want to call my brother, can I have my phone?”

“Sure, but I’d prefer if you would call him later also.  I want to have brunch and get going.”

Begrudgingly, “Okay.”

I never gave her the phone.  I turned it off and put it in my pocket.  She went for a shower, and I got busy dressing up the table and getting the rose from the car.  Then I went and got the ring from its hiding place and put the box in the pocket of my cargo pants.  When she came down, the table was set and she was a bit surprised that I had used the new placemats.  But she liked the rose.  We made the tea and then sat down to eat.   We said grace, and then, as we always do, we ended grace by kissing and saying

“I love you.”

But I continued

 “In fact…”

I knelt down, took her hand and pulled the box from my pocket,

“…I love you so much, that I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Her eyes were darting between me and the ring.   She was pretty shocked.  So, I opened the box and said

“Adriana, will you marry me?”

And, she said “Yes!” (eventually).
